Notre-Dame de Tournai Cathedral

 

A genuine masterpiece of architecture only 15 minutes away from the Resort by car. Tournai’s Cathedral of Our Lady is one of Belgium’s most important heritage sites and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

Nestled in the heart of the city, Notre Dame de Tournai serves as the church of the diocese and is the only religious edifice in Belgium originally built as a cathedral. A Gothic showpiece, this monument is one of the most impressive witnesses to Western art, with its harmonious combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles, its size and distinctive architectural features.

 

Built during the first half of the 12th century, the Tournai cathedral is notable for its exceptionally large Romanesque nave, the great sculptural richness of its vaults and a transept with five towers foreshadowing Gothic art.

Rebuilt in the 13th century, the choir is in pure Gothic style.
